Both systems are classified as "piggy-back" EFI controllers and therefore install is pretty much the same. Some may argue that since the TFI is a smaller design it can be positioned in better spots, but that only holds true for certain applications.

The TFI controller is adjusted using a flat head screwdriver and making modifications to the pot settings. The code within the TFI is set to be very generic and adaptable to handle a number of different modifications to a vehicle.
The Power Commander is adjusted by downloading the correct map to your computer and programming in the map. It can be fine tuned by paying a local dealer who is equipped with their WinPep software to make adjustments. If you make more modifications to your vehicle then you probably will have to download a new map.

Power Commander technology is based on RPM and throttle position (TPS). Tuning software is setup to create a grid or lookup table with the axes being 0-100% TPS and the RPM range say 1000 to 6000 for the vehicle. A percentage for fuel increase or decrease is entered into each cell. As the vehicle operates it continuously reads the inputs, looks up the fuel % value in the table, and modifies the pulse width to the injectors.
The TFI uses load-based technology. The inputs used to make adjustments are RPM and load. Load based tuning allows a user to tune their vehicle for every gear and for all riding conditions. Load can easily be explained by stating that riding up a hill puts more load on the vehicle than driving on a flat road. The fuel curve for a vehicle is broken down into three zones with each zone correlating to a carburetor adjustment and also to a vehicle driving condition. The driving conditions are cruise, acceleration, and full throttle. As the vehicle operates it calculates the load and RPM and modifies the pulse width to the injectors.

Power Commander has the ability to add and subtract fuel amounts.
The TFI only adds fuel. Due to emission standards most vehicles are slightly lean straight from the factory. Making additional modifications will also in most cases lean the vehicle out. It can be figured that around 80% of the time, all you have to do is add fuel.
