Private Label Spotlight - Lloydz Motor Workz

Back

Lloydz Motor Workz aka Hard On Horsepower - Lloyd Greer
Interview by Dallas Fischer

Lloyd Greer was one of the first private label clients I had the opportunity to meet and work with so I had to choose him for my first spotlight. Lloyd has been out to Montana a few times to visit our headquarters and I hope to be able to visit his shop in New York sometime soon. Lloyd was actually one of the early adaptors to our GEN2 technology and has continued on with the GEN3 controllers. I think what helps set Lloyd apart from other tuners and engine builders is his ability to test new products and understand the differences in technology. It's no secret to us that he sells the competitors' EFI controller. He found he can get it to work better for some configurations. Ultimately this is what helps drive technology, helps us improve our product, and helps gain customer satisfaction. If you ever attend a motorcycle rally or trade show, check if Lloydz Motor Workz is there. It will be well worth your time to chat with Lloyd Greer.

How did you end up in the Victory business and doing Victory Performance work?
I started working for and later became partnered with a full line Polaris dealership back in 1997, shortly after ward a guy shows up (Terri Nesbit) who was the national sales manager for Victory Motorcycle. As soon as I saw what they had to offer and knowing the capabilities of Polaris Industries, I knew it was something I needed to be a part of. We took on the Victory line in 1998 despite my partner's feelings about motorcycles. Once we took the line on it was my duty to set up the bikes. Apparently there were a lot of people complaining about how there bikes were running on the Internet forums except for my customers. I can remember a guy from NJ calling and wanting to set up an appointment for me to tune his bike. I thought, this guy is crazy. He wants to ride three hours for me to tune his bike! That was all it took, I had people calling from all over the country making appointments just for me to tune their bikes.

You are located in New York. How did you end up there?
I was born and raised in a little town called Walker Valley, New York. If it sounds like a Hillbilly/Redneck town, you're right it is. Being from a small town people didn't move out of state much. I was one that didn't either.

What annual event do you like to take part in the most?
I believe the most enjoyable would be the AVR (American Victory Rally). It's an event that Victory Corp. hosts near its Spirit Lake Iowa Plant. Because of it being a Victory event, we do have a captive audience and can talk to and mingle with our customer base.

What's the farthest anyone has shipped you their motorcycle to do a motor build?
We've received many from California and western Canada. Any further and it's usually just engine packages that we ship out because of the cost of freight.

Outside of your business and motorcycles, what one activity could I find you doing?
I have two young boys at home ages 2 and 5 so any spare time is usually spent with them generally. They love fishing, hunting, motorcycles, quads and of course video games so they take up the spare time activities.

What do you currently ride for a motorcycle?
I'm actually in between bikes right now. I sold my 03 Cruiser at Daytona and we're currently building a Hammer based custom. Riding is a non-existent activity for me any more due to several disc herniations in my neck and lower back and the two little guys. I can't even ride 20 miles on a non-fairing bike.

What motorcycle would be your dream ride to have in the garage?
That's a good one. We always have a tendency to go back to our first ride or first love. For me that would be a 1970 Honda SL 70. I've been looking for a replacement of that bike just to stick in the garage, of course, it wouldn't be a rider, but it would revive some memories. If I had more time to ride I'd have a tricked out Vision.
